Care Group Moved to Saturday

As a reminder, this week our Singles’ Caregroup will be meeting on Saturday night at 6:00pm for our Christmas party, instead of having our normal meeting on Friday night.

This means that you’ll have off Friday night now, to catch up on reading your Bible, have fellowship or just get extra sleep in preparation to serve on Saturday morning at the Gift-Wrap outreach at Toys-R-Us…

However you choose to spend Friday evening though, we really are looking forward to a great time together this Saturday serving folks at the Gift-Wrap Outreach (9:30am-3:00pm at Toys-R-Us) followed by dinner, fellowship and general, merrymaking festivities at our Singles’ Christmas Party (6:00pm-? At our house).  For those concerned about doing too much in your old age, you’ll have at least a couple of hours to get in a long nap or watch some reruns on the golf channel in between the Gift Wrap and Christmas Party.

Hopefully by now, you’ve already received separate “e-vite” e-mails for both of these events.  If you have gotten both “e-vites”, please make sure that you respond online to both of these invitations for us asap, since it is way easier to keep track of things and plan this way.  If not or if you have any questions, please drop me a line and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. If not or if you have any questions, contact the church office at, 864.346.2361 or info[at]sgcsc.org.

Free Na Registraion

Ten years ago New Attitude began. This year the staff at Na are looking back at God’s kindness and forward to what’s next. And they need your help.

They want to hear your own story of what God did through a Na conference in your life. So they’re offering one free registration until the beginning of registration (mid to late January). Every week they'll throw all the names of people that have submitted registration testimonies into a big hat and pick a winner. It’s that simple.

Do You Really Know Yourself?

"Know Thyself"
This was the highly esteemed Greek principle inscribed at the front entrance way to the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, which meant “Know Thyself”. The saying referred to the Greek value of understanding human behavior, morals and thought, because it was thought that ultimately to understand oneself is to understand other humans as well. Although there is some truth in the idea that knowing yourself is important, this idea has some serious limitations as well.

Knowing yourself is important if you are to understand what motivates you, what you desire and what you are living for. However, self-examination is not enough and in the end will prove futile if we do not examine ourselves in the light of God’s Word. We must seek to understand the desires and inclination of our sin nature that remain and then seek to apply the truth of Scripture our lives. We must know how our ambitions and desires stack up against what God says is true and discern how they compare to what the Bible says should motivate our lives.

Ultimately, our motivation should be to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord because of what He has done for us through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Or as the Apostle Paul said about living for the sake of Christ, “I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”

So what about you? Do you know yourself? If you answer the below questions honestly, (not how you know you should answer them but being honest about what you really think) they may help reveal what is motivating you:
  • What are your favorite things to do?
  • What do you like to spend time on?
  • What are your favorite things to watch?
  • What are your hobbies?
  • What do you like to spend money on?
  • Who are your favorite bands?
  • What are the last 5 songs or artists you downloaded on your iPod?
  • What are your favorite TV shows?
  • What are your favorite movies?
  • What are your favorite books?
  • What are your favorite shoes?
  • What are your favorite clothes?
  • What are your favorite games?
  • What are your favorite internet sites to go to?
  • What do you want to do in life?
  • What do you spend most of your free time doing?
  • Who do you want to notice you most?
  • Who do you most want to impress?

Your answers to the above questions could help reveal what you really love. The question is whether a motivation to live for God because of His great love for you is revealed? Or is a love for the world or the things of the world revealed?

1 John 2:15-17 says,
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world - the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions - is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

This scripture confronts us where we live and doesn’t leave us with any wiggle room. If we love the world or the things of the world, the love of the Father is not in us. This is radical. This requires that we know ourselves and that we live to love and please the Lord in what we do.

Obviously, because sin still remains in our hearts, our desires are never completely pure and our motives are most often mixed. The question is not whether we at times live for things other than God – the question is what the over-riding desire of our lives is normally. Do we seek to make each day an act of worship to God, even though we fail and need His grace continuously or are we just coasting along and living for the world and the things of the world without even realizing it? Or perhaps, even more seriously, are we living for the world and comfortable with it?

So, the question for us is, what do you love? Over the next few posts, we are going to address the topic of worldliness. In the meanwhile, I would encourage you to pray and ask the Lord to reveal your heart to you. Where you experience conviction, I would encourage you to repent and trust in the grace of God to enable you to live a life that is pleasing to Him. We can never earn our salvation or keep our salvation by how we live, but how we live is a good indicator of whether we really love God.

(By the way - you may have noticed that this is the same as the CrossCurrent post - Although I wouldn't normally have the same post on two blogs, I think this topic will serve both groups)

Yes, we have Caregroup!

We are having our regular Singles Caregroup tonight, at the normal location and normal time (7:00pm). I am looking forward to seeing everyone there tonight!

Josh R. has requested prayer for his mother (Joanna) who is dealing with severe health issues. Joanna has a double, auto-immune disorder where her body is rejecting her liver and pancreas. Her skin is also being affected by this disorder. Please also pray for Josh's father, James who is being affected financially because of the current economic situation. Remember Josh in prayer too, as he needs grace and wisdom to know how to minister to his parents during this time of trial.

Get your own ESVSB!

It's here! The long-awaited, much-hyped, ESV Study Bible has finally rolled off the presses!
I received my personal copy just last week, (we pre-ordered a while ago), and I've already benefited from it by reading the notes on the book of Habakkuk (we'll be hearing some messages from Habakkuk on Sunday mornings soon).

If you haven’t gotten your own ESVSB (that's a mouthful of an acronym), they’re available now in a variety of styles and colors. For those who like something other than leather (I prefer leather personally), you can also order it in hardcover.

No matter whether you prefer hardcover (for the bargain shopper), bonded leather, true tone, genuine leather or the ultra-luxurious, calfskin leather (can you say "uber-expensive"?), I'd encourage you to get one for yourself soon and experience a renewed desire to know God through his word.

    Free Song & Important Reminder!!!

m4230-00-21_s Excerpt from Bob Kauflin's Blog, Worship Matters:

Looked Upon (or Lu for short) is the first project of the Na Band, with Devon leading and Jordan playing drums. They’re joined by other members of my home church. The band’s purpose is to set “humble orthodoxy” to music. While they regularly lead worship at Covenant Life, each year they also lead at New Attitude, the Sovereign Grace annual conference for singles and young couples...After last year’s New Attitude conference over 6500 people downloaded a live version of the song, “What a Savior.”

This year, to give you a taste of the new project, we’re giving away the CD version of the same song. You can download it by clicking here.

I’m a Hypocrite (But the Gospel is for Sinners Like Me)

That’s right, I’m a hypocrite. I really don’t like to admit it and I’m not proud of it. In fact, I’m ashamed about it at times, although not nearly as often as I should be. My awareness of my hypocrisy often fluctuates, based on my awareness of my sin and failures or at times based on the raw truth of potential consequences for my hypocrisy. At times, viewing my hypocrisy makes me feel worthless and in the extreme, I respond in hopelessness. Sometimes I feel as if there is no way out, as if there is no way of escaping my own hypocrisy.

But this is a lie. The way out is to confess my hypocrisy, to confess my many sins and all of my failures - to see that God intended for me to come to Him weak, broken, humbled and contrite. Jesus came to save sinners, of which I am chief among sinners. And to see that no-one, not even I myself can deliver me from this body of sin and death that hangs about me. You see, I need to stop trusting in myself and looking to myself to change on my own. I cannot bring about God’s forgiveness through some work, or even deep sorrow, of my own. And I cannot either merit or take away from the work of forgiveness that only Jesus can give to me.

On my own, there is no way out and on my own things would indeed be hopeless. But, I must forsake myself and consider my old sin nature truly dead with the death of Christ. I must trust only in the hope that is in Jesus – that He alone earned my forgiveness, that He alone earned my right to stand before the Holy God as clean and deserving and that He alone has saved me from my sin and the wrath of God.

The Gospel – the Good News that Jesus came to save sinners, is truly for sinners like me. And the good news is that Jesus can make sinners like me saints in His sight. Does this mean I stop sinning? No. Does this mean that I now live a perfectly sinless and holy life every day? No. Does this mean I am no longer aware of my failures and that I no longer fall? No. But this does mean that all of my sins, my failures, my fallings, all of my hypocrisy were placed on Jesus as He hung on the Cross and my entire body of sin was crucified with Jesus – and I consider it as gone as a dead man, who dies only once.

The good news is that all of my hypocrisy deserved punishment and Someone else took it and paid for my hypocrisy by bleeding and suffering for me - by His own death. The good news is that God now looks on me as if I had never sinned, even though He knows the reality, and now He has credited me with all of the right and holy living that Jesus lived. This is good news and this is why a hypocrite like me can stand forgiven and free from the weight of hypocrisy. And this is why a hypocrite like me no longer wants to live like a hypocrite.

Now, by God’s grace I can enter into His presence, where I know I will find mercy and grace to help me in my time of need. Now, I no longer stand before God as a hypocrite – I stand as His child, because I have been made a new creation and I possess in reality the righteousness that I could never earn. Now, I can live in hope and confidence that God loves me and that He will give me His favor to enable me to live a life that is pleasing to Him. Thank God the gospel is for sinners like me.

He was…Marred; despised; rejected; pierced; wounded; a man of sorrows; acquainted with grief; as one from whom men hide their faces; despised; scorned; oppressed; afflicted; silent when wrongly accused; taken away in injustice; cut off out of the land of the living; stricken for our transgressions; crushed; numbered with the transgressors

    3. How should knowing that all of our sins were imputed to Jesus on the Cross affect how we view our own, daily sins? What should our response look like?

    4. How does knowing that we come before God, permanently wearing the righteousness that Jesus earned affect how we live?

    Weights for Working Out

While there are many great books one could read, I think there are a few must-read books that we should all read and then re-read, because we get fit most often through consistent repetition.

In the challenge of staying spiritually “fit”, I’d like to recommend you put the following books on your “must-have” list:
The Cross-Centered Life, by C.J. Mahaney
Stop Dating the Church, by Josh Harris
Disciplines for Life,by John Loftness & C.J. Mahaney
The Discipline of Grace, by Jerry Bridges
How Can I Change?, by C.J. Mahaney & Robin Boisvert
Why Small Groups?, various pastors, edited by C.J. Mahaney
    Knowing God, by J.I. Packer
The Holiness of God, by R. C. Sproul

    Working Out?

I recently was convicted that I had not been a good steward of the “temple” that God has given me. I had been eating in an unhealthy manner and not exercising – thus neglecting to care for the physical gift of my body that God has given me to carry out His purposes. Such neglect can be sinful (or reveal sin in my heart) and practically, will have an effect on my physical ability to obey the Lord in carrying out the roles He has called me to.

So, in response to new-found conviction, I changed the way I eat and bought a used piece of exercise equipment. It looks good in the garage too. But now, I must begin the process of making intentional changes to my schedule and start using the equipment if I want to benefit from it. As it turns out, conviction is a good thing but apparently, I have to put what I have to work if I want to see actual results.

Often we can be poor stewards of the minds that the Lord has given us too. This neglect not only reveals potential areas of sin, but it will also have a definite effect on our ability to live the Christian life and carry out our Biblical roles...

Aside from daily intake of the Bible, prayer, worship and sound teaching, I cannot recommend more highly the discipline of reading great books. In doing so though, I must first ask if you are reading and meditating on God’s Word daily, with the specific goal of hearing from God and applying His Word to your life. If you are not working out in this area, I’d encourage you to stop reading this post and go read your Bible instead – you’ll get way more out of it.

If, however, you have begun to develop your practice of daily Bible intake and application, I would encourage you to purchase some additional exercise equipment for your mind and soul. Get good books. You don’t have to look for the “uber-bender-lifter-3000” though; I’d encourage you to start with the basics. Start with one good book and when you’ve read it and sought to apply it to your life, move on to another and then go and re-read them.

In doing so, it is important that you begin with books that help expound the timeless truths that the Bible contains and stay with books that stay close to the Bible. And then, it is critical that you don’t just get books – read them. After all, they may look good on your shelf but they won’t do any good if you don’t put them to work practically.

In my next post, I’ll make some specific recommendations for your reading…

Why Should I Go to New Attitude?

    2173891829_e0b50cedbc

What's the big deal? Why should I go to New Attitude?

I can definitely understand some hesitancy, since a lot of folks haven’t ever attended a New Attitude conference and don’t know what it is all about. Below are some of our thoughts behind why we, (as your Pastors), are asking you to seriously consider attending New Attitude this year. I hope they will serve to answer the questions you may have.

    • The Gospel. The New Attitude 2008 conference plays a strategic role in our shared mission to advance the gospel. We want to instill in the hearts of those who will take our place a love for the cross of Christ, sound doctrine, and the local church.
    • It Equips. The reason New Attitude is strategic is simple: our family of churches benefits from having a context that gathers, equips, and inspires our singles, college students and young married couples in the gospel-centered values that define us.
    • The Shared Mission. New Attitude is important in cementing a clear identity for the next generation of our family of churches. New Attitude is a place where young people are reminded of the shared mission of Sovereign Grace as well as an opportunity for the values they’re learning in their local church to be reinforced.
    • To Serve. It’s also an opportunity for our movement to influence and serve the broader body of Christ. We want to gather this generation to spread the values that define Sovereign Grace. This not only happens through the gospel-centered messages, it happens in large part through the influence of the people that attend. So New Attitude is not only a place to be served – it’s also a chance for you to serve and affect others in our generation.
    • The Word of God. Lastly – this year’s theme, The Word of God, is not just Single or even “young” theme – it is a theme that all people can benefit from. We want to help people trust Scripture, obey Scripture and understand how to read and apply Scripture to their lives in a more effective manner.

New Attitude will be a great opportunity to grow in our knowledge of God through His Word, our passion for God because of His Word and our practical application in response to His Word. In the meanwhile, if you still have any questions about why you should attend New Attitude, I’ll be glad to talk to you about them – just let me know.

    Your bro,

    Adopted To Obey Our Father

I have a close friend who we watched walk through the process of adoption. The process took a while and after a couple of years, they adopted a young boy almost two years old. He was immediately both a joy… and a handful to them.

He was a handful because he was used to behaving according to his former ways that his foster parents had raised him in. His new parents loved him very much but, in many different ways, his behavior needed to change. He had formerly been conditioned to a way of life and his little brain just didn’t think in the ways that his new parents wanted him to act. But now that he was their son, part of their family and living in their household, he was expected to obey his new parents.

His parents worked with him patiently but he was expected to be different now because he was their child. Prior to being adopted, his behavior wasn’t important to his foster parents – but his behavior was very important to his new parents because it said something about them and about their family and about what they believed in regards to the behavior of a Christian child.

Now that we have been adopted, as children of God, it is natural to expect that our behavior would need to change. We’ve been made a new creation and born again into the family of God. We should no longer think like we used to and we should no longer view our behavior and sin the same way.

God instructs us through the Apostle Peter to not be conformed to the passions of our former ignorance – the desires that belong to our sin nature. We have a new Father and we need to find out what is pleasing to Him. If we are His children, our lives should be characterized by obedience to our Father. We must ask ourselves - What does a child of God look like? The simplest answer is that a child of God looks like their Father.

In Romans 8:29, the Apostle Paul tells us that the purpose for which God saved us was so that we might be conformed into the image of Christ. With this in mind, the command God gives us to “be holy as I am holy” is seen as a loving command of our Father, who cares for us very deeply and therefore wants what is truly best for us – our obedience to Him.

    Into the Waves with Dad

Since the sermon last week, I've heard from several folks who found an illustration that I used during the message particularly helpful. I've posted an edited version here for your review...

If I were to visit the beach with my family and take my two year old daughter Sarah into the waves, they would quickly start to affect her ability to walk. Even standing still in waves just up to her waist would soon become difficult and her feet would begin to sink into the sand because of the under-tow. As the waves plowed into her, she would struggle to keep standing. Then I would strategically take her into the waves, and while I did so, I would encourage her, saying “Sarah, you must stay close to Daddy and you must hold on, or you could get hurt”.

Perhaps, to encourage her to be brave and to learn what it feels like to be in bigger waves; to help develop confidence as well as a respect and healthy fear of the waves all at the same time, I might take her in a little deeper. As her loving Father I would never take her in deeper than was safe for her, even though she may feel like it. I may take her to the brink of fear but I would never torture her – I would be compassionate on her. My goal would be for her good and I would not allow her to bear more than would be necessary for her good.

As we transition into deeper waters, she might grab my hand more firmly and start to consciously rely on me as she becomes more aware of my need for her. With a mixture of fear and excitement, knowing she was holding me, she would charge into the wave with me. And as her dad, I would enjoy her dependence and reliance on me but I would be holding her even more firmly than her grasp on me.

When the waves begin, Sarah may enjoy the first one but soon the novelty wears off and the frothing of the waves along with the sudden rush of water in her face may deter her boldness. After a little taste of sea-water in her mouth, she might even start to pull back out of the waves. Fear might begin to creep in, where confidence once led her with me into the swirl of water and sand.

No matter what she thought though, as her Daddy, I would never let go. Even if her little two-year old grasp failed, I would still be holding onto her and never let her drown. A wave or two may frighten her or she may feel as if she will go under, but I would use all of my power so that she was in no way harmed and instead only helped, strengthened and encouraged by the situation – though maybe shaken.

Although she would not really be aware of what was transpiring, I would lift her up when the big waves came but lower her again to let her feel the little ones, until she grew more stable on her feet, learning to adapt to the shifting sand and the pull of the current.

Most likely, she would eventually find new-found joy in the waves, holding onto me but starting to enjoy the experience more as she began to trust in me. Her anxious glances up at me as if to ask, “are you sure this is ok?” would soon turn to happy looks of confidence in me as she began to rest in my arms while springing up and down in the waves. In the end, when we returned back to the beach to rest, she would be simply gleeful - telling her siblings about the great experience she had with dad and how she leapt over the waves.

Yes, it is true that in our Christian walk we must have faith in God and yes, He uses our faith to guard us, but in reality, it is He who holds us more tightly than we do and He will guard us and sustain the very faith the He requires.

Will we go through suffering? Most likely, yes, but as Peter wrote, only if God deems it. We should not be worried that we will suffer – God will guard our faith and He will keep us. We can take confidence knowing that our suffering will never be arbitrary – God is not out to get you. He does not want you to drown. His goal is to cause you to grow in your faith, to grow in becoming more like His son who went before us – the firstborn of the new creation and our joint-heir.

God, the loving Father who knows best will only allow us to suffer if necessary and only then for a little while – while we are on this earth.

Suffering was not a part of His original creation but He sometimes purposes to use suffering, if it is necessary, to actually help us, strengthen us, encourage us and increase our awareness of His grasp and our total dependence on Him.

Will we at times feel as if the waves are too much for us? Perhaps. But He is a loving Father – more loving than I could ever be towards my two-year old daughter and more loving than any earthly Father and He has said he won’t allow more temptation than we can bear – in Him.

He is also a more powerful Father. More powerful than me and than anything or any force in all of existence, both physical and spiritual and His grasp will not fail when the waves hit us in the face. We hope in God who guards us and who guards our faith, even when we’re not sure we will have enough faith to face the waves of suffering, even if they loom large in our eyes.

    Application Questions & Sunday Line-up

app. questions Scripture Verse: 1 Peter 1:3-9

Main Idea: We rejoice, because God has given us faith and hope and guards our faith and hope to the end.

    1. What do you find yourself hoping in most often - other than Jesus? If you’re not sure - what you are hoping in could be revealed by what you are most disappointed or angry about in response to not getting it?

    2. How have any of these hopes become idolatrous?
Remember, an idol is not defined by what you want but that you want it too much. An idol can be anything you are willing to sin to get or any desire you sin to fulfill.

    3. How was your understanding of your faith in God changed (or encouraged, etc.) as you heard about how God guards our faith?

    4. Have you viewed God as a loving Father who only lets us suffer “if necessary” or have you had a different view of God? Why?

    5. How can you practically change and begin to place more hope in God and the fact that He has given us faith and hope and guards our faith and hope?

    6. How can you practically pursue keep your hope alive in Christ? (God keeps it but calls us to an active relationship with Him – what should this look like?)

    Weeding the Garden

We used to have an ornamental tree at the front of our yard, surrounded by a flowerbed “moat” of sorts. We always had a difficult time getting things to grow around the tree because the soil was not particularly good. Parts of the “moat” were very shady at different times of the day and I never really gave it the attention that was needed.
After a couple of years of being mildly annoyed with the spectacle, I finally decided to do something about it. We purchased some good soil, leveled the bed out and planted bulbs for the spring-time, then added good ground-cover and flowers for the summertime and fall. I started to pay attention to it – watering it nightly and weeding it for a few moments every day after work. The “moat” around the tree started to look nice and I was proud of the results. Now, instead of being embarrassed, I felt a sense of accomplishment and I was encouraged to renovate the flower beds in front of our house and plant a garden out back.
It is amazing how seeing fruit in the “moat” began to effect how I viewed our yard and the potential for change that I now saw. Our yard was slowly and subtly transformed- it wasn’t the jewel of the neighborhood, but it was pleasant now instead of being an eye-sore.
Unfortunately, the transformation only lasted about a year. The next year, with another baby on the way, a new job, longer hours at work and less time in the yard, the inattention began to show. Weeds cropped up and began to choke out the flowers. The flower bed out front began to die without proper fertilizing and care. The garden out back only produced a mild crop. By the second year, the results of the neglect were more obvious and by the third year, it looked bleak.
One day, when my wife was out of town, I began to weed the flower beds. As I was pulling weeds, I marveled at how bad things looked and how subtle the changes had seemed at the time. As I was pulling the weeds, I began to realize that my own life was very similar to the gardens I was now working on - again.
You see, sometimes we can tend to ignore an area of our lives that needs attention but if it doesn’t seem major to us we do nothing about it until we begin to really hate our sin. This is a good kind of hatred – a hatred that causes us to respond to the prompting of the Holy Spirit and as we respond, we start to see just how ugly our sin is. To begin to change, God graciously has given us seeds (His Word) as well as many tools (means of grace) that we will need to plant and cultivate our garden. If we plant His Word in our lives and take advantage of the means of grace He has given us, we will begin to experience the mystery of change... Read Entire Article
